Changes in law about receiving Georgian citizenship

New regulations of obtainment of the citizenship were discussed during the sitting of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee yesterday, reports GHN according to information released by Georgian Parliament.

The child with one of the parent being the Georgian citizen at the moment of his/her birth shall be considered the Georgian citizen as provided under the change to the organic law on Citizenship of Georgia. Under the current law, the child with both parents being Georgian citizens at the moment of birth shall be considered Georgian citizen despite the place of birth.

According to the Deputy-Minister of Justice, Alexander Baramidze, the draft envisages new regulations of obtainment of the citizenship with the “principle of soil”. The regulation is established defining citizenship of Georgia of the child with one parent being the stateless person and another of uncertain citizenship. As he stated, there are novelties: the terms of citizenship of the full-grown and minor persons are differentiated, the new approaches are proposed for restoration of citizenship, the possibility to lose citizenship due to residing in foreign country is abolished. Upon consideration of general provisions and principles, the Committee supported the draft.
